Teams confirmed for all-women F1 feeder series
Formula 1 has announced the foundation teams for its new all-women series.
ART Grand Prix, Campos Racing, Carlin, MP Motorsport, and PREMA Racing will each field three cars in the F1 Academy development series.
The teams were chosen due to their roles in FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3.
It is understood that the teams have agreed to commit to at least the first three years of the series.
The inaugural F1 Academy season will take place over seven rounds of three races each, plus fifteen days of testing.
Formula 1 organisers plan to host the F1 Academy at least once on the F1 calendar.
“It is exciting to be able to announce the five teams that will be racing in the F1 Academy for next year and who will be providing this fantastic opportunity to the young and talented women to begin their journey into competitive motorsport," said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.
"We believe it is important that everyone has the chance to follow their ambitions and get the support and guidance needed to progress and excel."
"The F1 Academy is an important part of our plan to increase diversity and representation in motorsport and we are looking forward to the first season in 2023 and stay tuned for more news in this area.”
The series will run the Tatuus T421, currently used in Formula 4 championships across Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UK, among others.
It will be fitted with a 165 horsepower, Autotecnica-prepared engine, and use Pirelli tyres.
PREMA Racing team principal Rene Rosin said the team is proud of their involvement in the new series.
"Driver development has always been our vocation and we cannot wait to work with new and highly-motivated drivers," said Rosin.
"It's particularly exciting to see drivers work hard, improve and achieve outstanding results."
"In addition, we have a considerable history supporting the efforts towards women drivers and hopefully, in a short time, we will be celebrating another success story."
Campos Racing team principal Adrián Campos shared Rosin's enthusiasm.
"It’s a new challenge that underlines the growing of Campos Racing in recent years at the highest level."
"We are proud to be entering the new F1 Academy series, because it’s a concept closely linked to our DNA and history."
"We want to thank the confidence of F1."
"We are already working on the first season of F1 Academy."
"It’s an essential category to provide opportunities and visibility to women drivers at the best possible platform.”
The calendar for the 2023 F1 Academy series has not yet been announced.
