The American-Ecuadorian was involved in a crash at the same corner at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit which claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert during the 2019 FIA Formula 2 season.

Correa shattered bones in both legs and was placed on life support after falling into acute respiratory distress while in hospital.

“Getting behind the wheel and racing today was not easy,” Correa wrote on social media.

“I can’t really express how numb I feel, but I want to give my deepest condolences to Dilano’s family, team, and friends.”

“My deep thoughts are also with the other drivers involved. Stay strong, you have all my support.”

Correa was among drivers from the FIA Formula 2 field who learned of van ‘T Hoff’s passing while preparing for the sprint race at the Red Bull Ring.

He finished fourth after a solid performance at the front of the field.
