Electric junior series launches as 'Formula G' ahead of debut season

The ACE championship, a project from Formula E alumni Dilbagh Gill and Nick Heidfeld, will rebrand as “Formula G” as it begins racing in 2024.

Formula G, initially devised as a way to provide pathways for junior drivers into electric racing, will now be the world’s first dual-power, all-electric racing championship, running as a support series to existing events regardless of the power source.

The car, dubbed the FG-ETwin, will be capable of running at reduced power by a junior driver, then at full power by a professional driver.

The promoters hope this will allow them to run two simultaneous championships, with twenty drivers in each.

Formula G will also split the year into four regional championships, with races planned in the Americas, Latin America, Europe & Africa, and Southwest Asia.

Races in East Asia are planned to commence in 2026.

There will be ten teams competing in each region, with two cars and four drivers per team. Junior drivers will contest the F-G2 title, with professional drivers vying for the F-G1 championship.

“When Nick Heidfeld and I created ACE, we always envisioned two series with the same teams competing around the world at its own events” said Dilbagh Gill, Founder and CEO of Formula G.

“As we listened to team owners, promoters, owners of other motorsports series, and various stakeholders, it became clear that each region had its own economic and sustainability challenges and goals that we needed to address if Formula G was to become the leading support series in the fastest growing and underserved sector of motorsports.”

“I am proud that after receiving support at every level of the sport, Formula G, by launching as a support series in multiple regions, is the first global series to create affordability and accessibility, unique by region, that will enable Formula G to attract more diversity in team owners, drivers, mechanics and engineers, while creating significantly more career opportunities on and off the track.”

The “G” does not stand for any one word, instead representing different concepts: Green, Groundbreaking, Good, Growth, Global.
