Capacity crowd for Formula E season opener in Mexico City

A capacity crowd will be trackside in Mexico City for the 2023 FIA Formula E season opener.

The race will mark the debut of the third generation Formula E car, which the sport is billing as "the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built."

Forty-thousand fans will fill the stands for the next chapter in the history of the world championship.

There are changes among the eleven teams, as DS Automobiles has partnered with Penske Autosport to bring the DS Penske team to the grid, while McLaren and Maserati both join the grid.

Jaguar TCS Racing is the only team to bring an unchanged driver line-up to the 2023 season, with Kiwi Mitch Evans and teammate Sam Bird maintaining their partnership.

Fellow Kiwi Nick Cassidy remains at Envision Racing, joined this year by Season 2 champion Sébastien Buemi.

The sport itself has undergone a tune-up over the off-season, with a lap total now replacing the time-certain race finish, and fast charging in the pit lane to be trialled at certain races.

As well as being the first race for the GEN3 machinery, it will also be the first race for new tyre supplier Hankook, who say two years of research have gone into the new compound.

A new chicane has been added to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and the Attack Mode activation zone has been made more challenging with a new location at the exit of the stadium section.

Season 9 of the FIA Formula E World Championship begins with Free Practice at 9.30am Saturday (AEDT), culminating in the Mexico City E-Prix at 7.00am Sunday, live on Stan Sport.
