Formula 2, Formula 3 to move to sustainable fuels from 2023

The world's top-level feeder series will move to sustainable fuels form 2023 to prioritise net zero carbon efforts and better align with future Formula 1 regulations.

Formula Motorsport Limited, promoter of the FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 Championships, signed on Thursday a memorandum of understanding with Aramco to supply the fuels.

Formula 1 aims to become net zero carbon by 2030, with all FIA Championships required to use 100% "sustainable" fuels by 2026.

These fuels must contain a "bio component" or carbon-capture based synthetic component, and be approved by the FIA.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, says that the support categories will offer a testing ground for the products before they arrive in F1.

"It’s easier to implement such a significant change in F2 and in F3, as they are single-make categories with single suppliers," said Bruno Michel, CEO of FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3.

"We’re very happy to undertake an innovation role – as we did last season with the introduction of the 18-inch tires now used in F1 – and take the first steps towards synthetic sustainable fuel.”

Aramco, the "world's largest integrated oil and gas company" is still working on the development of these "sustainable" products, designed to be a "drop-in" replacement for conventional fuel products.

The company's internal target is net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2050, including the capture, use, or storage of 11 million metric tons of CO2 by 2035.
