Oscar Piastri to get first official taste of Formula 1 at Yas Marina
Oscar Piastri will get his first official Formula 1 drive in the post-season Young Driver Test at Yas Marina Circuit.
The Australian will spend a day behind the wheel of the current Alpine A521 driven by Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon during the F1 season.
“I’m very excited to drive in the Young Driver Test," said Piastri.
"It’s almost like my first official day in my new job for next year when I become the team’s Reserve Driver."
"Any day in an F1 car is pretty special but to drive the current one with other drivers on track in a somewhat competitive environment is very cool."
Piastri was recently announced as the Alpine reserve driver for 2022.
He goes into Abu Dhabi in the lead of the FIA Formula 2 championship, with a 51.5 point advantage over teammate Robert Shwartzman.
If Piastri clinches the title, it will be his third major title in three years, after taking out the Formula Renault Eurocup and FIA Formula 3 drivers' championships.
"Thanks to the team for this opportunity, I’m certainly looking forward to it and working through a very full testing programme on the day."
Alonso and Ocon will also drive during the test to trial the new 18-inch Pirelli tyres on the two-year-old Renault R.S.18.
