Liam Lawson fighting for rookie title in Euroformula Open finale at Monza

With the 2019 Euroformula Open Championship wrapped up by Marino Sato in Barcelona last time out, all eyes will be on the battle for the series’ rookie title, with Kiwi Liam Lawson just six points ahead of Linus Lundqvist.

Lawson is casting his eyes ahead, saying:

“Obviously it’s very cool to be leading the rookie title going into the last round, but our main goal is to try to take second in the championship.”

“This would be a really good result for us, especially after missing two rounds this year.”

There is a four-way battle on hand for the runner-up spot, with Lukas Dunner and Yuki Tsunoda joining Lawson and Lunqvist in mathematical contention.

Dunner is second on 166 points, with Lawson 12 points behind on 154. Lundqvist sits on 122 points, with Tsunoda on 117 points.

A range of new rookies will make their Euroformula Open debut as guests at the Italian circuit, including US star Kyle Kirkwood, the newly crowned Indy Pro 2000 Champion who has previously taken out the USF2000, F3 Americas, and United States Formula 4 titles.

Italian F4 star Lorenzo Ferrari will add his famous name to the grid, and Filip Kaminiarz will complete his 2019 test program with a race seat for the weekend.

The series will also farewell the Dallara F312/317, used during the last eight seasons, with the championship moving to the new Dallara 320 from 2020 onwards.

Australian Jack Doohan enters the weekend P11 in the championship after finishing second in the F3 Asian Championship two weeks ago, while Calan Williams is P13 and the lead driver for Fortec Motorsports.
