The rookie Red Bull driver with an open road ahead
Holy shit - Liam Lawson is only 17 years old.
Lawson showed his outstanding talent from his first taste of Formula 4 - taking second place in the 2017 Australian F4 Championship.
Van Amersfoort Racing brought the young Kiwi to the ADAC German F4 in 2018, where he came second, filling the shoes of fellow Kiwi Marcus Armstrong from the year before.
2019 saw Lawson enter the Toyota Racing Series, where he was the standout competitor, taking the fight to established New Zealander and Ferrari Academy driver Marcus Armstrong. Lawson won the title in a tight head-to-head battle that went down to the wire at the New Zealand Grand Prix, and was signed as a Red Bull Junior Driver immediately afterwards.
Lawson’s results and driving style in the TRS showed he was an eager rookie who was keen to take risks on his way to the top— the perfect formula for Red Bull. They gave him double-duty for 2019, racing in the new FIA Formula 3, as well as the Euroformula Open series.
Lawson had a second- and third-place finish in the FIA Formula 3 championship, where the competitive 30-car field was a proving ground for his rookie year.
In Euroformula Open, Lawson showed his potential in a dominant car, taking three race victories among his six podium finishes. He suffered from a conflicting calendar between the two series, as well as some unfortunate EF Open clashes with his teammates.
For a driver who only graduated to Formula 4 two years ago, and who is two years younger than his closest compatriot in Marcus Armstrong, Lawson has the world ahead of him, and is an exciting driver to watch for 2020.
