Jack Doohan "learnt a lot" in FIA Formula 3 Austria debut
Australian Red Bull junior Jack Doohan says that he “learnt a lot” on his FIA Formula 3 debut at the Austrian Grand Prix, with his weekend cut short due to technical drama.
"The weekend did not play out as we had hoped,” he said, looking back on the mixed results. “After qualifying, I had to start from the middle of the pack on Saturday.”
Doohan made the most of his mid-field start, but says the wrong brake bias setting destroyed his tyres. “In the race, the tyres ultimately overheated a little. That resulted in me dropping from eleventh to 14th place, and meant that I missed out on the reverse grid pole that I was hoping for.”
The son of five-time motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan had a more eventful session in Race 2 on Sunday, up to P12 before chassis issues forced him out of the race. “I had problems with the steering quite early on in the race, then my car unfortunately suffered light damage. I had to come into the pits and my race was over.”
Overall, he stated that is was “not an ideal weekend. We must now keep our chin up and stay focused."
However, speaking to Red Bull, he looked ahead positively to the Steiermark Grand Prix. “I think we learnt a lot though and I am sure there is a lot more to come next weekend.”
