FIA President cleared over F1 interference claims
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been cleared over claims he sought to interfere in the result of a F1 race and delay the certification of the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
As reported by the BBC and The Athletic, Ben Sulayem was cleared by the FIA’s Ethics Committee after receiving whistleblower complaints.
The whistleblower had claimed that he had intervened to overturn a penalty given to Fernando Alonso at the Saudi Arabian Prix.
The same whistleblower also alleged Ben Sulayem had sought to delay or cancel the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix over track certification issues.
The FIA said there was no evidence to support either claim.
"After reviewing the results of the inquiries, the Ethics Committee were unanimous in their determination that there was no evidence to substantiate allegations of interference of any kind involving the FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem,” said a FIA spokesperson.
The BBC reported the review had lasted 30 days and included interviews with 11 witnesses.
"The president showed complete co-operation, transparency, and compliance throughout the process during this investigation was greatly appreciated.”
