David Schumacher wins for the first time in fiery FIA Formula 3 outing in Austria
David Schumacher has taken his first victory of the FIA Formula 3 season, making his mark in a shining lights-to-flag performance at the Red Bull Ring.
Championship leader Dennis Hauger finished third after a similarly dominant showing, making up nine places after starting the race in twelfth.
Schumacher controlled the race from the start, leading away from the reverse-grid pole ahead of Roman Stanek.
Logan Sargeant's day went from bad to worse on Lap 2, colliding with Tijmen Van der Helm in a nasty incident that saw both drivers retire from the race.
Sargeant had just lost his Race 1 podium as part of a slew of post-race penalties, and was looking to recover in his second race of the day.
The pair battled through Turn 1, with Sargeant coming out ahead before Van der Helm clipped the American's rear wheel, sending both drivers into the wall in what was later determined to be a racing incident.
The Safety Car neutralised the field while the two stricken cars were removed from the circuit, with Schumacher holding his lead at the restart.
Red Bull academy driver Jak Crawford made the most of the compressed field, up to second on Lap 10.
It was short-lived for the American, who lost power moments after the move, retiring from the race.
Meanwhile, Frederik Vesti and Kaylen Frederick battled for fourth into Turn 3, with Frederick losing control and spinning into Juan Manuel Correa ahead.
Jack Doohan took full advantage of the mayhem, passing Caio Collet for seventh.
After a brief Virtual Safety Car to clear Crawford's car from the track, the skirmishes continued.
Victor Martins was already up five positions and now duelling with Roman Stanek for second, while Vesti got past Jonny Edgar and Jack Doohan overtook Enzo Fittipaldi, all in quick succession.
Victor Martins completed the pass on Stanek with a brave move down the inside, putting two wheels into the dirt to avoid the Czech driver's defences.
With a multi-car battle emerging for the lower podium positions, Schumacher had checked out ahead, opening a 3.6 second lead to Martins.
Caio Collet earned a five-second penalty for his part in the battle with Fittipaldi, as the pair collided and skidded out into the gravel.
Martins became the second driver to retire from second place, as he also lost power.
Jack Doohan passed Edgar for fifth, but the British driver earned the place back just moments before the Virtual Safety Car was called to clear Martins' car from the track.
With two laps remaining at the restart, Arthur Leclerc made a last-dash pass on Doohan, dropping the Australian to seventh in the final order.
Leclerc was one of the many stars of the Saturday afternoon outing, finishing sixth after making up 21 positions during the race, and Johnathan Hoggard finished tenth after starting in P27 - but all attention at the chequered flag was on Schumacher.
The German driver took his first win of the season and was ecstatic, celebrating on the radio with his team.
“That was an amazing race," said Schumacher.
"It is my first time on the podium, and it’s a victory."
"It feels amazing."
"Our pace was pretty strong throughout the race, especially at the beginning when I was able to
pull a gap."
"Afterwards, it was about keeping it clean and finishing the race.”
Frederik Vesti and Dennis Hauger completed the podium.
Hauger holds the lead of the championship on 97 points, while Jack Doohan moves up to second on 72 points.
Aussie Calan Williams finished in fifteenth.
