Daniel Ricciardo considered for F1 "Manningcast" in 2023
Daniel Ricciardo could join the ESPN broadcast team as he takes a year out of Formula 1 in 2023.
“He’s obviously a tremendous personality that really resonates with the fans, especially in this country,” ESPN president of programming and original content Burke Magnus told RACER.
“So nothing specific there, but I don’t think it’s a stretch. I have no idea what he’s interested in doing honestly, but he’s certainly got the personality for our line of work, I would say.”
Magnus confirmed that while ESPN will continue to take the Sky Sports UK feed for race-day coverage, options are still being considered for the Australian.
“We haven’t made any firm decisions but Manningcast, for example, that we do on Monday Night Football, something like that for Formula 1 would be incredibly interesting as well – an alternate presentation above the race that could help sweep in casual fans."
"The upside in our business is always the casual fan."
"The avid fans are going to be there, the upside is getting more casual fans and creating avid fans of them.”
ESPN recently renewed their F1 broadcast deal until 2025, including new direct-to-consumer rights which allows F1 content to be broadcast on the ESPN+ app.
“We are delighted to announce that our partnership with ESPN will continue,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO at Formula 1.
“Formula 1 has seen incredible growth in the United States with sold out events and record television audiences, and the addition of Las Vegas to the calendar next season, alongside Austin and Miami, will see us host three spectacular races there."
"The ESPN networks have played a huge part in that growth with their dedicated quality coverage.
"We are excited to expand our relationship and continue to bring the passion and excitement of Formula 1 to our viewers in the US together.”
While ESPN broadcasts Formula 1 in the United States, Australian broadcasting rights are held by Fox Sports Australia.
